How about Sim Works getaround? They are wide, and give a better hand position while preserving the reach. I like mine on my old Rockhopper.
Thanks for the suggestion. They look nice; but at £59 are possibly a bit too spendy for this bike
My vote is for quills stem adapter, spacer to set the height without making the stem look anaemic, cheapy eBay stem and Ergotec/Humpert bars in whatever sweep & rise is your favour:
