Unless you have your heart set on carbon, the Specialized Chisel Comp looks good too

I might be tempted to not get a full on XC bike unless you intend to race it though

Sorry, Howard!

Failing that, a Geometron, obvs

I'm no noob now!
I get given them, so I am biased. But yeah it's a good bike. Really tough and fast.
Do not get a bike with sram though. Get shimano 1x12. Any level.
Obviously a out of box bike will need new tyres and mayve get the spoke tension checked by a good wheel builder, we cost a few quid and be worth it -
• #15383
Huh? Yeah I’d say the same.

Air Spring on the fox fork just pulls out when you've got the lowers off. No tools required, so quite hard to mess up.
Yeah, I could remove the damper - but then it looks super fragile. If i was to post, I think i'd leave it in the fork as the best protection going. I've messaged Moose cycles in Colliers Wood as I could drop the fork there on my commute. They are fox service people so should at least know a lot more than me.
Still, I'm going to give the oil change a go first. I just like to try and do stuff myself and so far touches wood its all been fine.

Those PlanetX/Sick bikes are right on budget
Looks weird as fuck to me

Great spec, although very much a 'winch & plummet' type bike
I'm unsure of Kent's topography, so no idea if that sort of bike would suit

I'm not saying it's a good idea to buy one. But it's approaching meme geo

There is always the option of @youramericanlover allowing me to design him a Marino...

That wheelbase is freaking me the fuck out.
I have no idea at all about MTBs, this reminds me of the time in 2011 when I went into BLB asking about Aerospokes. That's how clueless I am. Other than hardtail, lighter for longer distance riding and shimano only (@skinny has spoken so I'll listen) I have no idea where to start.
MTBs are cheap to maintain tho right? I can replace the chainset on my fixie for £50.

Do you have a preference for material?
Other than double denim

my guess is that carbon is jangly on the bones and more expensive. so probably alume-min-num? carbon would be cool though, it might impress other Rival Dads. not steel. do they even make steel mtbs anymore?

If you want to attach bags n shit to the inside of the triangle carbon is a bit susceptible to being destroyed by the straps.
-
• #15398
Ah! Then aluminium it is.

• #15399
my guess is that carbon is jangly on the bones
I wouldn't think so. Howard's FSI seems to have loads of compliance engineered into it
and more expensive
Well yeah, the alu Grand Canyon gives you better components for the same pice, but is almost 1.5kg heavier
