Don't use that mechanic again.
Sv tensioners fail, it is common fail on the sv engine. I'd check the front tensioner as that is the that usually goes. Easy to id big and little end noise.

Didn't pay anything. Just stopped by for a couple of words. I've used the Burwins lot before and they've been excellent.
To be honest, I take everything with a pinch of salt, and I had in mind the stuck tensioner as well, so will be checking that before anything.They're dirt cheap, and bang on like you said, it's coming from the front cylinder.

Well, sods law and all. Just went to get a second opinion on what I suspected was cam chain noise and none of what the Mechanics said was inspiring. Probably a loose cam chain with fucked crankshaft bearings.
Looks like some hard choices will have to be made...
