  • any adivce on stripping and rust removal, i was planning on glass bead blasting my frame, is thre a better option?

  • Look at soda blasting.

  • My home cheapo method is Japlac, painted with a brush. Smooth and cool with the right technique.
Nitromors to remove the original paint, Kurust and one coat with Japlac is enough for a durable, cheap refinish.
    Here's one of mine.

  • is there much of a weight difference between powder coating and enamel paint jobs?

The views on the net are mixed. I also think the dates of these posts may be a factor as those claiming big weight diffs seem to be from posts from about 2005, maybe PC has got better or lighter?

If i was to repaint a light genius tubed frame will i have lost the advantage such a light frame would provide if i powder coated it?

  • Depends on the applier. You are right about the small evolution that
came to powder coating the last 10 years but concerns the appliance
of it, not much of the composition.
You can find shops that could add 90g - 120g of paint on a 56 frame for
example, or someone that could add several less.

The main point is not the grams when we build our everyday bike (i hope)
but the quality that we gain in relation of the cost.
If a carefully applied powder coat cost more than enamel and we don't
need its' confessedly stronger characteristics (that we percentage loose as we try to achieve finer finish) why bother?
Do we need stronger paint than a slowly cured enamel?
If yes, the powder coat is a nice option.
Are we talking about single layered powder coat? one color, without clear coat or secondary colors etc, that could double the weight?

You can estimate a single layered coat as double weighted instead of a complete
enamel paint including decals and many colors. That is not a weight advantage loss in
my opinion if you think that you need a more durable paint.

I try to use light powder coat only when i think that enamels' durability is
except prescription of the use and anodized paint doesn't apply or create
a "confusion" depending the bikes' overview...

this is an example of a fine powder coat that could be achieved
without causing trouble to parts' primary use, i measure it at an average of 0.1mm

  • Powder paints ftw

  • Hi all,

putting together a smart little brochure for powder-coat of bike frames and wondering if anyone can help me?

I need to write a little FAQ section and would love some opinions please.

    What questions do you have about powder-coating a frame? So far I've got;

    . Can carbon be powder-coated?

    No, only metals

. How long does the service take?

Depending on your service choice, 14 working days

Any other questions you can think of?

    Thanks!

  • Dredge to avoid starting a new thread.

Anyone powdercoated a frame that's recently been framesavered/dinitroled? Did you have any issues with oil coming out of breathers etc?

I'm thinking of getting a few frames coated but they are ones I've built or modified over the last year and sprayed Dinitrol into.

I got a Pompino powdercoated last year and there was a bit on the bottom bracket shell that didn't take so well and I wondered if it was that grease etc from inside the seattube had melted in the oven and dribbled out there.

I could spray some disc brake cleaner into the tubes to try and wash the dinitrol out but I don't imagine it'll do a very thorough job.

  • just had a frame coated by armourtex, i mentioned the framesaver when i took it in, they said not to worry and that they would do something involving a bath of solvents

I havent got it back yet but im picking it up tonight, ill post some pics in my cp thread this evening when i have it built up, if you wanna see their work.

  • I'm up in Glasgow so will be looking to get the work done locally. I've had a recommendation of a place so I'll ask them about it.

  • hand this bronze powder coated for a gift. it's a Rory O'Brien/Romford, Essex branch. No decals as yet. Circa 1972/3ish.
