  • I need some help guys.
I'd like to get a mountain bike. I want something for exploring off-road rather than going fast at dedicated MTB parks. I'd also like to use if for occasional bike-packing trips.
Something simple, single speed or 1X and rigid.
Having not had a MTB since I was akid in the 90s I don't know where to start looking.
I'm probably looking for a frame to build up as I'm fussy about parts. Also I have a set of 650b disc wheels but that's not a deal breaker. (what's the pros and cons 29 vs 650b?)
Sorry I know that's a lot of questions.

  • I've got a Charge Cooker 0 SS 650+. It's been awesome but all I would say is be wary of differing standards when looking at frames. My intention was to swap out the 650+ with narrower tyre'd 29ers for summer riding, but trying to find 29er wheels off the shelf with a 135 OLD has been more difficult that it should be, in my opinion. The bike is only 3-4 yrs old and is essentially obsolete. If I'm simply ignorant of the right places to look please do enlighten me!! could be an excuse for a new bootzipper though...

  • This is just one of the side effects of the industry constantly bringing out new 'standards'.

"* could be an excuse for a new bootzipper though...*" is exactly why they do it.

Depends on your budget but I think with Hope hubs the same shell is used for 135,142 and 'boost' 148mm oln widths and its just a case of changing the endcaps (and maybe the axle?).

  • Halo do 100/135 for most, if not all, their 29er wheels. American Classic too.

If you get the right combo of hubs, Hope and DT Swiss have adapters. Hunt also seem to offer adapters for their non-boost 29er wheels (fill in some form after ordering).
