Strip back to bare essentials, return stem and bars to OSisDEAD spec and some not too fat tanwalls and that’s done.

Spent last night stripping this down, mostly everything was sound except :
Knackered rear shifter
NDS plastic threaded insert for the BB disintegrated
Seatpost stuck. Not too bothered about any of these as I have spares and now soaking the seat tube in cola overnight to see if that does the trick, if not caustic soda will be next.

All stripped down, a bit of a clean and polish the start sorting out the re-build

A quick mock up and the saddle to bar drop is too many negative scoble bricks so going with some old monkey bars

I had the same struggle with these conversions many times haha. Apparently the long and low aggressive geometry of retro MTBs aren't suited for this kind of usage.

Original fork, flat bars. That's the way.

I have ordered a steerer extender which cost as much as the bike! that way I have more choice over the bars.
Trouble is I prefer the look of drops but the comfort of flats- will probably go for some swept back raleigh ones
Inspiration from this

ERGON, GA3 for example. Not the cheapest though.

Nice, I was thinking about some cork ones

I have a pair of these in black you can have for the cost of postage? They've served me well but switching to drops. Shoot me a PM if you want them!
(You can have them lined up so that you can't really see the enormous Race Face lettering as well)

Have used these Raleigh bars for last year or so on my gt, they are great

Looking good. I take it the cola did the trick for seatpost removal, or did you have to resort to more drastic measures?

Nope the cola worked a treat- not even a premium brand cola just store brand too!
I have had to use caustic soda on a stuck stem in steel forks before, took about 3 days but that worked too.
So having been inspired by all the 90's ATB conversions I finally succumbed to building a Dad bike and will stop changing the dropper on my Krampus for a rigid with a tag-along bracket.
I have been looking on local F***book market place but saw this beaut at the local recycling centre and managed to haggle it down to £8
I have always been a sucker for the GT triple triangle, this is a nice large frame with 525 butted tubing!
I have yet to see what will work and what needs replacing, also whether upright swept back bars or drops with bar-end shifters.
Waiting for the Mrs to go out and our daughter to go to bed so I can get this up in the kitchen with a glass of red and see whats what.
