I'm looking for cheap ~42c tyres for my Tricross Singlecross (I think this is the safe size in the back, front can take even up to 2.1'') for some SSCX riding in the forests, maybe some racing for fun if I find an event nearby. Not tubeless, for now I would prefer a cheap universal option as I don't want to mess with tyre changing in my secondary bike.
I am considering Schwalbe Smart Sam 1.6 or Continental AT Ride 42c, Speedride 42c also look interesting but probably too slick for mucky conditions in the winter/early spring. Any other recommendations?

Tyres I have listed are all 10-12 GBP in Poland. Knard is not available in Poland, Nano wire bead is about 18, I don't think it's worth spending extra for them. I would rather invest in a proper, lighter, tubeless ready wheelset later and switch to some tubeless tyres then.

I was quite impressed by smart sams in 40mm. Seemed good for the price.

Damn spoilt for choice now.. checked the other day and they were full price. Ordered the Vees already but that's a really good deal.

They seem the most universal choice to me, I could both ride some hard surfaces and maybe even a bit of SSCX racing with them. How did you find durability (wear especially when ridden on tarmac), wet traction and puncture protection? Did you have the 42-622 (28 x 1.60, 700x40C) size? Are they 40 or 42 mm wide when mounted?

I had 700 40 and they came up as 38 on my 19mm rims.

Wet traction was a good enough improvement on my continental cyclo-cross speeds for me to make it up some muddy inclines that previously defeated me. Also much faster than I expected on the roads.

Can't speak too much for durability as I barely used them before I decided that riding my bike in the mud was a pita.

Sold out all across UK in every store, so would love to hear if anything else compares to it that I can buy here before I order Tufos from Germany. (or if anyone knows where they still sell it in the UK)
