  • I cover mine with fingers if I'm on a dark path in the rain and someone comes the other way. Only polite.

  • Had someone riding his brakeless boardman have a go at me on oxford street for "riding too fast" so pointed out he could also ride fast if he wasn't riding brakeless in the rain and as I have decent brakes I can actually stop. He then went into a rant about the use of brakes being unsafe as "you can't feel your speed" and that he didn't care if he was fined or locked up he would never ride with brakes. I had to pull over and stop to facepalm while making sure to take a different route.

  • Saw 3 examples of some horrendous cycling this morning all from the same person all within 50 metres.

    Firstly he undertakes me at speed just as I am pulling away from the lights (I assume he wasnt going to stop as they had just gone amber when he flew through). There was barely enough space to fit through let alone at speed.

    Then he takes his dickish riding to the outside of the traffic we were approaching, and I watch as he filters down the right hand side of cars turning right (again at a speed that was too fast for the situation) making the car who had started his right turn have to stamp on the brakes.

    And to top it off we get to the front of the (busy) junction of Creek Road and Deptford Church street and he flies through the red light without slowing to even check if it's safe to do so.

    I would consider that a pretty dim light. Even more so if you're on a road that isn't right in the centre, there's loads of spots where street lighting is not really that bright, never mind the middle of Richmond Park or the like.

  • The guy riding a bread deliver trike, bombing down Highgate Hill most mornings.
    Blows through the traffic lights outside Whittington Hospital, regardless of colour, usually passing a bus stopped at the lights, can't possibly see if someone is on the crossing or not.
    Often comes into the shared space by Archway station at speed, carves across pedestrians to get onto Junction Road.
    Utter bellend.

  • I have a 150 lux (that's lumen, right?) light and it's more than enough for streets, even without lighting. It's not all about the lumens...

    Not quite. Lumen is a measure for how much light is emitted, lux says something about how much light arrives at a specific point - so lumen is (kind of) looking at the source, while lux is looking at the 'target'.

    In the context of a lamp, lux only really means something when combined with a distance. 100 lumen is 100 lumen no matter what you point the lamp at, as that's just the amount of light it emits - 100 lux however might be measured at 1m distance, or at 100m distance, and it makes a very big difference in terms of what kind of light you'd need for that.

    Note how 500 lumen translates to only 28 lux at 10m distance in their example.

  • Thanks mate, for managing to squeeze your bike lock nicely between my frame and the SA gear cable, in Waterloo earlier this eve. Quite a feat!
    Fortunately you can unscrew it by hand and reattach, but it was all stretched and out of adjustment which made for an annoying ride home.

  • Artful, reminds me of the forum on full 'small curses' form. Glad it wasn't worse.

  • Am I right in thinking this person was a bit of a dick? Riding on Bream's Buildings behind someone, there's a van parked up pointing towards us on the right side of the road and then a van in the process of moving around it also towards us. I didn't fancy squeezing through the decreasing gap so stopped to wait for the van to get through but the person in front went through without slowing. Got through the thin gap and then clipped the backpack of someone who was crossing behind the moving van from right to left. They then started mouthing off at the pedestrian that they should look where they are going and whatever else for a bit whilst cycling off. Excellent drawing below which will place you all in the scene perfectly

  • Completely agree. Hate seeing impatient cunts doing that sort of stuff when it should be obvious why you're waiting.

  • Clearly the van driver was the cunt in this situation as they should have stopped and waited for the cyclist to pass as the obstruction was on their side of the road- I bet other van driver shouldn’t have stopped there either. If the cyclist was in a car the driver would probably wait but, since he wasn’t, the driver thought he could bully his way through.

  • The stopped driver could well be, was on double yellows and couldn't see any obvious loading or unloading going on so who knows. Should point out that the other van driver was already moving around the stopped van before we had entered the road, so unless they're expected to just wait until the way is completely clear I can't find them at any fault I don't think. They did actually stop in the middle of pulling around when they saw that the cyclist was going to take the thin way through, then continued when I waved them through whilst stopped.

  • I don't think it's as much an output issue - round my way it's more the fact they're probably the cheapest billion-giga-candle efforts that spread the light in all directions, apart from the ground, and they're usually pointing forwards at fucking face height to begin with...

    Last 10 or so miles of my commute is pretty much rural with no stray light coming in whatsoever, I deliberately use the lowest setting I can actually see with on my bar mounted light - pointed at the ground 15ft in front of me - and an exposure light mounted on my helmet to illuminate where i'm looking, there's a guy I pass regularly that I have to slow to a crawl to pass as I literally cannot see a fucking thing other than his bloody light for about 50ft until he passes me, it's like close encounters of the third fucking kind!

  • Don’t really understand what you mean here. Was there a junction right before that you entered the road from?
