• I know that SRAM rear derailleurs aren’t compatible with other shifters, but what about front derailleurs? I need a top pull front derailleur and I have a Shimano one. I’m using SRAM bar end shifters. Is the cable pull the same? And vice versa, will a Shimano Alivio trigger shifter work with a SRAM Rival front derailleur?

EDIT:To clarify, on one bike I have SRAM 500 TT bar end shifters (not sure if the left is indexed, I’ve never used it) and want to use a Shimano Alivio 3x front derailleur to possibly make it 2x9.

Other bike has Shimano Alivio 3x trigger shifter, was thinking of using a SRAM Rival (or really old 105) front derailleur to make it 2x8 or 3x8 (I never use the granny gear, so won’t mind if I lose it).

Or I just leave everything in place and buy a cheap narrowwide and go 1x9.

  • I don't know if it helps you any, but I'm using a Microshift friction bar end shifter for Shimano MTB 2x/3x with a Shimano 105 road 2x derailleur, and it works fine.

My point is that I have the feeling that if the bar end shifter is all friction anyway, pull ratios don't really matter? But could be completely wrong. In my case it works.

@edscoble definitely knows about this, I'm sure.
