Real countryside doesn’t start until you’re a 2 hour walk clear of the nearest city

I hear they have London fields now.
Don't you have Gracie Fields ?

The tip of Scotland, therefore?

2 hour walk is 8 miles (10 miles at a push). Plenty of places are 8-10 miles from a city.

Sounds large, is always reckoned sustained reading speed to be about 3 miles an hour.

8 miles from Manchester city centre is Stockport, if you go down the A6 there isn't much in the way of fields.

7 miles from the nearest small/medium town in any direction, 30 odd from a city. Hurrah, I am a six-fingered inbred who eats roadkill and dresses like a Hobbit!

Maybe that will be the slogan for rejoining the EU: We just want our countryside back.

if you live in cheetham hill in manchester you're about 2 miles walk from deansgate in town and about 4 miles walk from actual farms near simister in the other direction – i just checked.
is cheetham hill in a city, a remote countryside village, or a white nationalist stronghold? only dammit can decide.

Newcastle has the town moor right in middle that freemen of the city have the right to graze cattle on. Had to cross it to get from my grandparents to the city centre. Is that the countryside? Dunno really but did use to ride through a lot of cow shit on my longboard

This currently the main blocker to us moving back to NI. Granted, ms_com is not BME, but she grew up very much not middle class in the centre of Angel Town/Myatts Fields in Brixton. So the lack of diversity/integration in NI is very concerning for her. I am trying to put forward the argument that NI is not the same place we left 14 years ago and it is improving (you can get Ramen now in Belfast, RAMEN!). That and the fact that the Grenfell Tower effigy burning party that made the news was less than a mile from our current front door; NI was 56% Remain and they just had their first same sex marriage. I am also seeing more and more NF lookalike stickers on lamp posts round here. Although that could be some football thing I'm not aware of.
To me, being mortgage free before I'm 40 in a 4-5 bed house, with double garage+shed, 5 min from my ageing parents, walking/dander distance beach and countryside would be a massive win.
If you can walk to both the centre of your City and to a field from where you live in under 2 hours = you live in the countryside.
