Less known Spain: Asturia, Galicia and Cantabria

  • Hi All, I am planning my next cycling trip, this time it happens to be my honeymoon.

We would like to cycle from Porto to Bilbao, going deep into the regions above mentioned, rather than the more renowned coast and also not necessarily following the Camino Frances route.

Any input would be greatly apreciated as usual.
    Picture below for attention:

  • Keeping an eye on this thread as I am interested in doing something similar later in the year. Would like to get the ferry to Santander and then cycle to Porto or Barcelona to either of the Primavera Sounds festivals.

edit: are you Gio from Manchester?

  • I can't offer any help other than saying that Galicia is beautiful and the food is amazing

  • Not the same Gio I am afraid, I'm Italian Gio based in London

  • Galicia is beautiful and the food is amazing

    Seconded!

  • Also, Los Picos are spectacular. Emulate the Vuelta riders by going up to Lagos de Covadonga

  • Yep yep, that is pretty much the only hard point on the route so far ;)

  • I did a similar route a few years ago. Great experience. Definitely check out the picos de Europa. I rode in from the southern side then hike-a-biked some famous gorge trail (maybe 50% rideable on an mtb) of about 7 miles. It was a cool experience and tough but doable. It’s about the only way through the range if I recall correctly. Lots of hostels on the camino frances and Norte routes for cheap accommodation - I traveled fast and light on road. You can also check out angliru if you want a killer infamous climb

  • Yeah, about Angliru, I showed it to my wife and she almost divorced me!

I believe you are talking about Senda del Cares which was on the radar already. Any advantage in pushing bikes there rather than just doing a out and back hike with no bike?

Any tip for Galicia? Any other highlights from your trip?

  • Hey, dunno if you're still planning this trip. A few friends and I rode from Leon (spain) to Geneva last year bikepacking with a train across central France. We went through Castilla Leon, Asturias, Cantabria, Pais Vasco etc.

We spent a fair amount of time planning our route, I could give you some tips and share you our komoot files. The only thing is that we were bikepacking, aka riding MTBs majority offroad on singletrack. I dunno if thats what you are looking for.
