When Londoners think they have the monopoly on Remain, non-racist politics
I'd love to move out of London, but whenever I bring it up my girlfriend mentions that as we ride into the countryside from London you see two opposing things (or did, during the referendum period and the one that followed):
- Steady reduction in traffic lights until they're (almost) gone
- Steady increase in Brexit/UKIP signs, Engerlund flags hanging from windows
I can't deny it as I saw it too, and so far it's effectively prevented any move out of London, so if you could fix the countryside that would be cracking.
- Steady reduction in traffic lights until they're (almost) gone

Don't go to Kent then

"i'd like to move out of london, but the rest of the population of the UK, whose attitudes i've meticulously extrapolated from the times i've ridden past some houses in surrey and kent on a bicycle, are too thick."

I grew up in the countryside, but I grew up white and middle class - when someone who isn't both of those things tells me that they feel the impact of nationalist/racist signs as we go into Kent then I'm going to listen.
Should I tell my girlfriend that she's imagining things, that her experience is a fiction?

I'd like to move to the South Downs, it's the area I know from growing up.

Go to the western end.

Probably getting at the fact that "Not London" ≠ countryside.
-
• #13510
Move to Scotland
-
• #13511
Anyone who says that is wrong.
The UK has London, and the Countryside.
-
• #13512
Surely you've had the displeasure of going past Birmingham on your way to another more wonderful not countryside.
-
• #13513
There’s zero displeasure in going past Birmingham

Mrs B is from that neck of the non-woods, much of her family still lives in the area. She doesn't miss it and certainly doesn't visit.

isn't it just a collection of kentish towns held together by an angus steakhouse?

I grew up in a City, in the countryside. How could you tell it was in the countryside? Because if you turned right out of the front door you were in a field surrounded by cows within 5 minutes, and if you turned left you were standing in the high street 5 minutes later.
In London, from where I type this, it's a two and a half hour walk to get to fields.
It's a two and a half hour walk to the centre of town from here, also.

and therefore....

I hear they have London fields now.

Hmm I too am white middle class and the only people in my family who voted Brexit are my non-white in-laws
But they don’t put flags up...unless it’s the World Cup
That London however..Union flags everywhere shops just selling stuff covered in flags union flag teddy bears for indoctrination purposes
Never!
