  • I grew up in the countryside, but I grew up white and middle class - when someone who isn't both of those things tells me that they feel the impact of nationalist/racist signs as we go into Kent then I'm going to listen.

Should I tell my girlfriend that she's imagining things, that her experience is a fiction?

  • Probably getting at the fact that "Not London" ≠ countryside.

  • Hmm I too am white middle class and the only people in my family who voted Brexit are my non-white in-laws

But they don’t put flags up...unless it’s the World Cup

That London however..Union flags everywhere shops just selling stuff covered in flags union flag teddy bears for indoctrination purposes

  • This currently the main blocker to us moving back to NI. Granted, ms_com is not BME, but she grew up very much not middle class in the centre of Angel Town/Myatts Fields in Brixton. So the lack of diversity/integration in NI is very concerning for her. I am trying to put forward the argument that NI is not the same place we left 14 years ago and it is improving (you can get Ramen now in Belfast, RAMEN!). That and the fact that the Grenfell Tower effigy burning party that made the news was less than a mile from our current front door; NI was 56% Remain and they just had their first same sex marriage. I am also seeing more and more NF lookalike stickers on lamp posts round here. Although that could be some football thing I'm not aware of.

To me, being mortgage free before I'm 40 in a 4-5 bed house, with double garage+shed, 5 min from my ageing parents, walking/dander distance beach and countryside would be a massive win.
