It all has to go through the same semi-automated filtering process anyway.
1. A significant portion of the human race is too lazy or stupid to put the right things in the right bins.
2. What's allowable in each category is complicated and inconsistent anyway (most recycling centres don't bother with shredded paper and as for plastic...)

Yes, a mucky, time wasting, annoying ceremony - and it's this that makes me so infuriated because it's a barrier to anyone who is just slightly lazier than me. I've never once in ten years seen anyone else from our block recycle anything - it makes me feel like such a mug!

According to somebody I know who used to work in waste management, various service companies would be fine operating a centralised waste separation service but the unions and other groups try to block this due to concerns for whether it is acceptable to pay somebody minimum wage and get them to sort trash all day every day. It's a popular view that this sort of work is "inhuman".

Meanwhile, in a waste processing plant (hidden in a mountain) that I know in Switzerland, workers manually separate waste in return for £20ph.
