  • If it's just going to be used for training intervals and following breadcrumb grx routes, it might be worth taking a look at the 530. No touchscreen (a good thing), very reliable, same form factor as the 830.

  • Yeah that might work, I need to read up on the Element more. I couldn't work out whether it relies on paid subscription services (like trainer road) to be able to create custom workout plans. Their literature is strongly biased towards this but does mention 'other' 3rd party apps.

  • Hmm, £280 for the bundlefrom bike Inn, that's pretty good actually.

  • Sorry not sure, I dont make workouts.

    The 530 is good as @danstuff says. I'd use one happily. If you're happy with push buttons.

    I asked about this last summer and @hazzelfrazzel wrote this reply idk if it's all still valid. I did alright with Training Peaks free version for a while. Hopefully going to be using it again soon

  • The only GPS I've used previously is an Oregon 450, which was actually touchscreen, but totally shit, so unless it's much, much better than that maybe buttons would be good.

  • Thanks, that's really useful. I might shoot Wahoo an email too

  • Picked up one of those cheap edge 25s and got a speed sensor from a colleague so I can use it on the velodrome but am I right in thinking I somehow need to calibrate things so it knows I’m using a 700 x 23 tyre? Gave it a quick spin in the stand and it seemed to be showing quite a high speed for how quickly the cranks were turning but I could be wrong.

    Can’t see anywhere in the head unit to tell it wheel/tyre size.

    I have to ride a mile in a straight line with the gps on and speed sensor attached. Which I cannot do on my track bike. So I will try it on a bike with 700x28 tyres instead of 700 x 23 and hope the difference isn’t too much.

  • Garmin edge 1000 threw a fit today and is stuck continually turning itself off and on again.

    I have tried resetting it. Briefly it connected to my laptop and I managed to install the latest software update but the problem still remains and it is just going off and on again.

    It is a few years old. Any suggestions as to how to fix it?

    Are garmin likely to offer an exchange or replacement at some kind of cost?

    If not, what is the forum approved cycle gps/computer these days?

    Factory hard reset? If that doesn't fix it, then I doubt anything else will.

    Dunno, but if they do offer anything I suspect it will be a different more modern unit at a modest discount.

    Here's my experiences on the ones I've used recently (ignoring the Garmin 500/800/810 which aren't available and the 520/820 which are just shite):

    Garmin 1030 - overall excellent, stable, good screen, capacitive touchscreen is still a PITA though. Rather large and stupidly expensive. Good for nav, although IME the routing using the device is hopeless.
    Garmin 130 - small, cheap, stable. No good for nav as the screen's too small, and the buttons are flimsy and tend to get stuck down.
    Wahoo Elemnt - stable, works well, routing is fine as long as you have your phone on you. Good large screen, but the altitude sensor goes all wobbly after a while and turns into a random number generator, I suspect due to the barometric pressure ports getting blocked.
    Wahoo Elemnt Bolt - like the Elemnt except the screen's too small for navigating except on very simple routes, and the altitude sensor doesn't seem to go wobbly presumably because it's covered up by the aero mount.
    Karoo Hammerhead - fantastic screen, versatile device. However, the firmware's still a bit flaky (albeit not as bad as the abomination it shipped with) and it's useless if the Karoo website back end goes down, which is something of a concern as I'm not convinced Karoo is going to be around for ever.

    @Cycliste has an 830 and seems to like it - personally I'm tempted by the 530 as I've grown to loathe capacitive touchscreens on cycle computers given that they can't tell the difference between my fingers and beads of sweat or drops of rain.

    tl;dr: Garmin 1030 if you want nav, Wahoo Bolt if you don't.

  • How is routing on the 830 @Cycliste ?

  • Routing on most devices is mostly abyssmal, much better to use something like RWGPS etc to create routes and send to the device.

  • Have you tried removing the memory card before plugging it into a laptop? I've had similar issues on an 800 and it would never boot up with the card in.

    If that doesn't work..

    https://www.gpsnation.com/support/gps-factory-reset/garmin-edge-1000-factory-reset.html

  • Are garmin likely to offer an exchange or replacement at some kind of cost?

    They will replace for 25% of RRP, assuming policy hasn't changed for a couple of years.

  • Have you downloaded free osm maps onto it? I had an issue with them bugging out on my 520 at one point, had to remove and go back to gmapbmap, redownload and reinstall

  • Removed any routes and maps from the device?

    Factory reset and then you can get filesystem downloads for 800 so I assume you can get the same for 1000.

    It's out of warranty so they'll offer you a refurb unit for 200 quid probably. Then you might be able to argue about it until it's free.

  • Fyi. Etrex touch is a POS. Rinses though batteries and touch screen shockingly bad.
    Went back to 35x.

  • Apparently she hasn't used it for nav yet. @Cycliste isn't much of a poster on here - more a lurker/stalker. Apparently she only logs on to find out what I and @skinny are up to. @skinny should either be flattered or afraid. Possibly both.

  • Does anyone have a hub based speed sensor for sale before I buy a new one? It’s for the velodrome so specifically on that goes on the hub/axle.

  • LOL.
    General procrastination is my game

  • did several rides with edge 530 and i really impressed! especially by battery life. charged it to 100%, did 2 rides 7+ and 6+ hours and it now has 65% left. with track navigation on, ant+ hr sensor, and phone connected. very nice screen, acceptable operation in gloves even on the go (on road).

  • this is more about apps than GPS but thought this would be a good place to ask:

    I have a wahoo gps which uploads to strava - all good there;
    i'm considering getting things for running, sleep tracking, HR monitoring and weight tracking;
    current thinking is to get a garmin forerunner watch;
    if i do that, i will probably get garmin wifi scales.

    so that will mean i'm using garmin connect (which I didn't like last time i had a garmin GPS but that was years ago) for non cycling data and strava for cycling.

    is there somewhere (an app / platform) that would host the data from wahoo and garmin in one place?

    or should i just turn everything off and find a cave go live in?

  • Training peaks.
    Or some of the other training apps

    Or just use an excel spreadsheet.

    Or just go to the pub and dont worry about such stuff

  • Or just go to the pub and dont worry about such stuff

    This is the best advice.

  • yes, very probably.

    drawback of internet is time spent reading about stuff that doesn't really matter.
