Fair enough Ed, you’ve more experience than me. Like Turkish, I’d rather avoid £30+ cables where possible.

So in terns of out and out stopping power (mtb) - decent mec system with yokozuna is up there w/ hydro?

• #104
not in the slightest

In fairness those Clarke's aren't the best.
Hey him some of these

I'm saying that mechanical disc are powerful, rather than being completely useless, but not in the same sense as hydraulic, as they're more progressive, e.g. the more you squeeze the more powerful with little to equal amount of effort.
Meaning, I don't recommend it for downhill bicycles.

Considering a decent set of Clarks brakes cost a little more than that! (and they're excellent, fitted Shimano pads, clean rotor, and got much better modulation).
I just went for BB5 because I'm not looking to get all-out power as much as I can, as long I can easily come to a full stop from a steep descent without having to squeeze the levers hard.

11-40 9 speed, new 9 speed chain and 30t cassette, old shifter and derailleur, work perfectly.
Those long cage derailleur I doubt it can do more than 40t sprocket in general.

The Avid BB5 bedded in perfectly that I’m trying to be careful not to lock the rear wheel even on tarmac.

I would agree with this completely.
After having problems with every hydro I buy leaking (yes some of these probably my fault for buying 2nd hand off eBay but also new deores leak eventually) then I’m happy to trade the power for more reliability.
With BB7 I find you have to trim the tab on the outboard pad as it tend to hit the mount and cause the pad to not sit flush.

So, Planet X pricing on a bootzipper; a boost spaced thru axle rigid 29ers with modern geometry was too good to pass, that I decided it make for an excellent MTB tourer, just need to swap the Shimano hydraulic to the BB5 from the white bike, and then get rid of the Diamondback for the 2nd times.
On top of this, managed to source a Surly Extra Terrestrials 2.5 tyres for half the RRP on eBay, quick blast and sealant added, now running at 10psi made for awesome traction.

I guess it's not hard when you don't have a child on the way.

I had kevlar compression-less housing on the Bootzipper, while they work perfectly well, it still have a similar issues that derailleur housing have when it’s under pressure as the kevlar outer compressed revealing the straids, but not a serious problem, the alu ferrule that come with the housing help keep it in place.

Fitted Yokozuna Reaction where it’s wrapped with a steel coil on the outside keeping the straids in place rather than kelvar, already it’s noticably powerful and lighter.
I used to think MTB don’t really need compressionless housing, I changed my mind.
BB5s are awesome, fight me @amey

Treat yourself to some BB7s, Ed. If only for the not-weird brake pads

BB5s are awesome
get over yourself, a magura hydro makes a BB5 look like an early learning centre toy

Funny that, the caliper body flex a little more than the BB5 when I swap it round to feel the difference (I think due to two pads adjuster than just the one on the static side), I find the action nice and lights on BB5 in comparison, which felt snappier.
Not saying this won’t do the jobs, it will quite well and a noticeable improvements from low compression housing.
