I tend to avoid i7 if only for improved battery life. I only really use a laptop for browser based tasks so don't need anything particularly crunchy. I5 used to offer about 15% better battery life for the same tasks a few years ago, not sure if changed recently.
For what it's worth, the throttling scandal isn't Dell specific. It's basically all laptop manufacturers including Apple that do it.
I suppose it all comes down to budget. For me, the extra £250 is worth it in return for the nicer design and screen. Don't get me wrong, the Inspiron is a good laptop. Its just that the XPS is one of the best laptops.
