  • They are certainly keen to collect your details, when I was still deciding on Alienware vs custom build. I emailed them with a couple of quesitons re: upgrades, nothing they couldn't just answer there and then, but they insisted I need to give them my phone number and full address and when I emailed back to ask why, they never bothered replying...

  • The fun begins if they know you ordered and cancelled.

    I've said too much 🤣

  • Not buying another computer of any kind for at least 3 or 4 years now... so they can give me all the discount all they want... but I will be sure to tell my students as Alienware seems to be very popular with those who do VR/AR...

  • Having a chat with Dell now - I can get the Inspiron 15 - 7590 with the same internals as the XPS 15 for £770.

I think at that price is the dogs.

  • Tell them you really can’t afford it unless they knock another 10% off...

  • @sumo got a Helios 300 with i7-9750h/16gb/1660Ti in the end for $800. Done with my Switch as I’ve played BOTW so will sell that to offset the cost. Not too shabby. Acer’s refurb store had 10% off and they didn’t charge sales tax. Winning.

  • I'd still go for the xps personally as I prefer the XPS build quality and form factor. What's the price difference?

  • Anybody interested in my 2017 Surface Pro 5?

Model 1796, i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD. Charger, type cover and pen included.

External case has light scratching otherwise in great condition.

    £400.

  • That same laptop is £1500 here. Good deal.

  • Jesus wept. Good deal indeed.

  • Around £250 depending on what model of XPS.

  • I suppose it all comes down to budget. For me, the extra £250 is worth it in return for the nicer design and screen. Don't get me wrong, the Inspiron is a good laptop. Its just that the XPS is one of the best laptops.

  • I am hearing that the i7 of both the XPS and inspiron really do overheat and throttle quite often.

  • I tend to avoid i7 if only for improved battery life. I only really use a laptop for browser based tasks so don't need anything particularly crunchy. I5 used to offer about 15% better battery life for the same tasks a few years ago, not sure if changed recently.

For what it's worth, the throttling scandal isn't Dell specific. It's basically all laptop manufacturers including Apple that do it.

  • Could be interested as my OH was looking for a new laptop for work.

It would just be standard MS Office based work. Nothing crazy. The portability appeals to me.

Does it come with a keyboard?

    Let me check.

  • Depends entirely on the cooling of the laptop, too. You can also use something like ThrottleStop to undervolt the CPU.

The laptop I just purchased (w/ 6 core i7) doesn’t throttle, because of a factory undervolt and adequate cooling - so it is possible to bypass the throttling issue with some tweaks.

  • So the I5 would be more than capable as a photography option?

  • Just looking and its really a case of form factor - with the XPS13 being a similar price to the inspiron 15.

Since the 13inch currently has further discounts.

The £800 quid will be i7 512ssd and 16gb ram.

Laptopmag says I'll get 12 hours of battery life from it vs a little more from the inspirion.

    hmmmmm

  • XPS is simply a nicer machine than the Inspiron. I’d go for the XPS if it’s in budget.

  • XPS 13 is a really nice size in terms of carrying and screen:bezel ratio. Having had one for ~5 years I'd find it hard to go back to a "normal" laptop

  • How has no one mentioned carbon fibre in all this xps chat?!?

  • Because its a non-issue in real life?

    Edit: and @spotter hhnnnng

  • Why would a wireless adapter work after running Troubleshooter in win10 but fail again every boot? Does this Troubleshooter bollocks not save whatever it does? Old HP laptop that I upgraded from Win7 to Win10. I only use it for turbo training so it doesn't bother me that much but it's one of those - why don't you just save the fucking settings then stupid machine? problems that I could do without.

  • its out now!

But I'm looking to buy from the dell outlet I cant imagine they'll be on there any time soon!!!
