"I stopped tapping about 3 years ago, because I couldn't find a reason to do it that was better than the reason for not doing it."So, yeah, I'll keep tapping because this coffee genius only gave up tapping because shoulder shrug it's probably quicker not to.

I still tap the portafilter... It just works...
I'd been doing the grind, declump with cocktail stick then tamp thing for a while with very mixed results... The gadget gives me the same result every time... Must be Italian magic...

What is that and where do I get one?

I mean, I still want one just to try it out, but to be honest I make most of my espresso using my Handpresso these days without turning the big machine on. It has a tiny plastic grounds basket and I use the squeezy honey bottle! (its lid was about the right size) to tamp it because I'm too tight to buy one of these (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ultra-Lightweight-Coffee-Tamper-set-Handpresso-Minipresso-Staresso-V-2-CreaMOD/192496341138)

I had three brass discs turned for me to fit my moka pots and my wife's handpresso, cost me about $15 each. The silver bit on top of the one in the pic is a drawer handle.

£0 (the missus paid for the honey, I repurposed it)

Weirdly that doesn't make me regret $$$ spent at all.

I'm just holding off until one of those bikegang tampers drops in price somewhere. The honey bottle has worked for months now though so maybe I'll never buy a tamper?

never buy a tamper?
That’s my guess

Yeah, bought it at my local coffee roasters... Pay day treat, didn't even check the price online... Bit of Oz tax in there as well but I did pay over the odds...

Seems a good moment to ask a geek out coffee levelling/tamping question. Fairly recently got a sage barista machine which I am happy with.
While the grinds seem well distributed without clumping they are droppped into the portafilter in such a way (height/aerated) that there is quite a mound, when dosing what I think is the 'right' amount of coffee.
This mound can lead to coffee going everywhere when trying to level/tamp. I have as such developed a routine where I grind a 'single' baskets worth of coffee, light tamp to level initial dose, then another single dose and my 'normal' tamp.
While I feel this is giving an acceptable/delicious coffee, interested to hear suggestions as to why/if this might be having unintended negative consequences.

Give it a shake as it's dosing, that's sorted it mostly for me.

It's a great little tool anyway, that along with a VST basket has improved my shots no end

Sounds like you've got too much coffee going in there. What weight are you using? Try banging the portafilter down to level the grind before trying to ramp. Don't bang after the tamp.

You tried the IMS shower screen? Very good bit of kit...
Wrong!
