  • Will the keyboard still be working though?

I've used Dells for work (not my choice) for the past fifteen years including a lot of travel and had no issues with them breaking despite plenty of bashing about.

For a four year old laptop with a dated processor it seems incredibly pricey.

  • Really? It seem to me to be more about people asking advice on how to update very old Macbooks because they're still working fine and the screens haven't fallen off.
I'll accept not all Apple stuff is built the best, the plastic unibody ones for example, but they're so much more solid than any Windows based laptop I've ever used. And the fact they make the OS and the hardware means the performance degradation over time is so much less. I'm far from an Apple fan boy but for laptops they're unbeatable. Desktop is a different story.

  • Any of the ones with the butterfly design are now under the extended warranty program. So if it breaks you can get it replaced for free. That said I know they're a major downside.

It's a 4 year old laptop but considering they've only just updated the design it's not exactly out of date. The current ones still use an i5.

I'm not saying that's the best deal on one you can find, I linked to that one because I bought my latest Macbook from that shop and I know they're not a scam. To buy an equivalent one new with 16gb ram and 500gb hdd it's £1,879.00.

  • A modern i5 is easily twice as fast as that i5 though (for multithreaded stuff at least). There was a hefty jump in processor speed with the 8th generation (that laptop will be sixth generation, Intel are currently on 10th generation) where a lot of them ended up with double the cores.

  • I have to agree - my work computers have always been dell and they have taken such a beating and they're still running fine.

  • Ha! True there is a lot of that too.

I think a lot depends on what you compare them too. My dad's got a 13" Lenovo mac look-a-like and that's perfectly solid however many years on.

Ultimately tho they're really expensive. So they should last and be decent.

  • Leaning towards this now it does look very nice too!

Do you have the pen thing too?

  • £95 difference between the 4k and non 4k model.

    What would you recommend?

  • Can you charge from usbc?

  • I don't have the pen. Considering it but just haven't got to it yet.
I got the non 4k. Battery life should be a bit better on it (though the 4k one has a larger battery so that might compensate).

You can charge from usb C

  • blogging

    ..is this still a thing?

  • Yes, so long as it's sufficiently powerful. I've got a similar model that trickle charges at 24W so it doesn't need too much.

  • Yep, It complains if the charger isn't quite powerful enough, but it'll happily trickle charge, and a £15 PD charger from Amazon does the job well

  • So a new challenger has appeared.

I can get the dell XPS 13 7390 for £1037

512gb 16gb ram i7-10510U Processor (Quad Core, Up to 4.90GHz

    What do you think?

  • XPS 13 are the dogs clock weights.

  • @spenceey
I pondered the same and opted for the Inspiron as it's about £300 cheaper.
Identical spec as the non-XPS Inspiron 7391, minus the tablet/hinge stuff.

If I were going XPS then I'd probably plump for the newest 2-in-1. Not because I particularly care about the touchscreen, but it has the slightly better chips (1065G7 vs 10510u), much better graphics (Iris 650 apparently twice as quick as 620. Albeit neither are gaming chips) and slightly higher res (1920x1200 rather than 1920x1080)

  • The two drawing factors for me were the weight and better battery life!

  • Right - XPS I've found a coupon too that drives the price to £971.

    13inch - 16gb ram and 512 ssd i7-8565U

  • Top tip. Place the order and them cancel it an hour or two later. Wait for the call from Dell. Tell them you changed your mind because you can't afford it. Receive further discount. Send me PM to say thanks.

  • I read something like this on reddit the other day. You can also online chat them, threaten to cancel and they'll say 'we can give you credit of x' and then you say no please cancel and they'll say 'okay my best and final offer is a credit of x'!

  • cheeky cunts making the same offer twice

  • What?! That shit works?!

  • Really? Dell does that? That’s interesting! 🤔

  • Just get on their system

    I've said too much.

  • They do a lot to convert your sale if they think you have a chance.

You tend to get a bigger discount if you're paying via credit although they do it for cash too.
