it's a device they will be using every day for years to come (quite possibly the last laptop they will buy in their life) so might as well spend a bit more money on something nice

I'm down with this. Are all the issues sorted with Catalina now then? I've been holding off.

I don't know, as mentioned above I'm currently running Windows myself
(you see where this is going - I'm projecting my frustration outward, also using the elderly as guinea pigs before jumping back to MacOS myself : )

This is why it's easier to stick to being an iPad using, Honda Jazz driving, Pinnacle Arkose rider.
