I don't think switching them to a Mac when they're old and have been using Windows for 30 years because it's more convenient for you makes much sense, they'll have to learn a whole new OS.
It's not primarily because it will be more convenient for me, it's primarily because it will be less annoying for them in the first place. Mac OS is just a lot more smooth sailing without any stupid alerts and fuckups, this is what will a) make their life easier and b) my life easier.
And I do not agree one has to "learn" the new OS. It's very much self-explanatory and intuitive, at least for the level these guys are using a computer.
I switched people fighting with android devices to iPhones - and they all fucking love it and use all the functions like a boss, without me even having to explain anything. I do believe switching said Windows 7 users to Catalina will work in a similar fashion.Of course macs are not cheap, but actually the 2019 Airs are on sale now so price difference isn't that high, and the main factor is it's a device they will be using every day for years to come (quite possibly the last laptop they will buy in their life) so might as well spend a bit more money on something nice.
A Chromebook
Fuck "Chromebooks" and fuck google-everything.

So no to learning a new os unless it’s chrome? Or can you run Windows on a chromebook?
If they're already using Chrome they won't need to learn anything, if they're using a different browser then it will be almost identical in function to Chrome and a very minor change.
Nearly everything everyone does on a computer is in a browser these days. If they actually need to run software other than a browser then obviously a Chromebook won't work.

I'm down with this. Are all the issues sorted with Catalina now then? I've been holding off.

I don't know, as mentioned above I'm currently running Windows myself
(you see where this is going - I'm projecting my frustration outward, also using the elderly as guinea pigs before jumping back to MacOS myself : ) -

This is why it's easier to stick to being an iPad using, Honda Jazz driving, Pinnacle Arkose rider.

Nah man.. Catalina sucks. My adobe CS6 dont work, my autocad dont work and canny afford to pay for modern versions :(

Dude, CS6 is eight years old, how long do you expect them to support it?

My Macbook Air battery is pretty fucked. Had it booked in for the Apple store on Friday but seems it's a pretty easy DIY job for about half the price. Are there any better battery suppliers or should I just go off Amazon reviews?

FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I'd go with https://eustore.ifixit.com/en as they have a brand to protect. Amazon / ebay feels a lot riskier

I have an “iProPower” from Amazon and it seems to be decent capacity and my house hasn’t burnt down.
I briefly tried a “Lenoge” also from Amazon and a couple of quid less and it was shite that held even less charge than the old one it replaced.

just won an iphone xs 256gb off ebay to replace my four year old iphone 6 128gb, which I brought off the forum. Hoping I get 4years out of this phone as well..

I too have an iProPower from Amazon since last Feb, seems to be working fine. It stays at home plugged in most of the time, but no fires or swelling so far.

iPhone 7, served me well for 3 years plus but battery has gone. Can replace it for 55 euros. Looked at the diy way but it'll be 30 euros and about an hour work so doesn't seem worth it? Looking at xiaomi phones at a replacement tho so not sure which way to go...

so doesn't seem worth it?
No experience of a 7, but I replaced the screen on a 4s which requires removing the battery. Looking at ifix the battery design is similar.
I wouldn't recommend replacing a screen unless you're brassic or love that sort of stuff, but removing the battery is simple.
The one thing to factor is the cost of a decent set of screwdrivers if you don't have them. The free ones in the kit I got were rubbish and the chrome(?) plating on the first set I bought from a shop was too thick rendering them unusable, so I took them back and got a more expensive set. Obviously good tools are an investment.
No surprise, but there are lots of good cheap android options. Though you'll probably need to spend ~£200 for a decent camera which still may not produce as good pic - so either way a new battery is cheaper.

Hmm. I got to the steps where you have to open the screen like a book and then saw all the connectors / ribbons I could fuck up.
I've already worked on my 4s but that seemed simpler. Part of me wants to give it a go but part of me doesn't want to run to a shop afterwards to have them fix my mistake and I'll end up with a bigger bill :p

Hi folk
Anyone in the market for a display?
Selling a 27" Apple Thunderbolt display (2560x1440) with box, no dead pixels, no scratches etc. Great overall condition. only thing to note is there's a bit of electrical tape round the thunderbolt connector as the cable outer had split. The inner is still fully protected by the outer as well as some braiding so nothing to worry about.
comes with the magsafe port adapter so you can use either magsafe 1 or 2.
£300 collection from Highbury N5.
here are the integrated expansion ports (not my pic)
pics of screen and cables attached

The other half finally managed to fill up her 128GB iphone with photo's/video's of the daughter and she demands an immediate solution for extra storage. I’m hesitant about icloud because of the monthly cost and not having a backup solution myself. The integration into ios and osx is as seamless as can get though and will hard to match I guess.
I have pootled around with nextcloud running on a pi4 but the experience was horrible for me so that’s definitely not an option.
I have looked at synology, qnap and WDcloud (but seems grim). Any advice on a nas that has a really nice ios/osx integration? I have a spare macmini running for time machine and file storage and plex server, but I have not found anything usefull for offloading photo’s from ios devices.

Gf’s mid 2010 MacBook Pro is slowly dying a death. Hasn’t got the money to replace it but would like purchase and fit a new battery, and replace the spinning disk with an ssd. Are there any other worthwhile upgrades to be done?
We’re looking at getting the replacement parts on the ifixit eu store. If there is somewhere better to look let me know please :)!
Edit- just scrolled up and saw pretty much the same question being asked

Highly doubt you can find an easier and better priced option than iCloud, these are the monthly costs. 200gb should keep her going for a while?
50GB: £0.79
200GB: £2.49
2TB: £6.99 -

What kboy said. Don't waste time looking at other options.
I had this with my dad who shots most photos as a video first, followed by a minimum of 3 photos, but ideally 15.
iCloud is the best solution. It was also cheaper than being sold $1k phones by the phoneshop guys for extra GBs.
Me or my mum still also do interim hard backups as well.

For most people Chrome OS isn't really an OS though. It's just basically using a browser, the subset of the OS which is what most people actually require.
