there was a period where this was really common on Mercedes / VW vans, i assume because they're at a standard ride height where you don't need to jack them up and seemingly quick to remove

Yeah jazz are targeted for cats. Think they are very easy to get to. Think the Prius is also targeted.
Edit: you can get a cat saver/protector

I read Honda Jazz mentioned a couple of pages back so the following is for info.
Recently we've been getting a number of cars in for (insurance) repair that have had their cats stolen. 3 of the last 5 have been Honda Jazzes. It seems they're quick to nick and the cost has written off two of them.
