I went over the bars once after getting out of the saddle to pedal hard and my chain slipping in the way you describe.
I did that on a poorly-adjusted Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub, and ended up landing face first on the very pointy railings outside the University Library in Cambridge. I still bear the scars.
Maybe you’re right. I’m sure a new one and a chain will sort it. Do get it sorted though, I went over the bars once after getting out of the saddle to pedal hard and my chain slipping in the way you describe. Cranks spun with no resistance and I chucked myself off the bike essentially. Broke my helmet, glasses and saddle annoyingly.
