On closer inspection, the cassette is (also) the culprit. Given my riding - flat, never change front chainring and only use a narrow range at the rear, this would explain a lot.
As the cassette is on Prime, I’ll see if that helps the issue.

Looks a bit worn but I doubt it would cause the chain to skip, some of the teeth are supposed to be profiled to aid shifting.
