Possibly. Either that or they embraced the stench as a sign of ripeness and occasionally tore chunks away with their teeth, gnashing away at the rotten flesh with their frothing mouths. Rather than greedily eat their stinking bounty they decided the wisest approach would be to cache the rest for colder months. Normally feral animals have stronger constitutions but they were failed this time. Terry has rolled his wife back into the sea and myxomatosis has gotten the better of him now, sadly.
