This is probably wildly optimistic but anywhere decent for fish and chips (preferably with gravy and curry sauce) around Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Oxford Circus, etc?

There is! if Tottenham court road counts.. Gigs.

Or there's a Poppies in Soho. the one is Shoreditch is decent.

Gigs was the backup plan if I couldn't find anywhere more central.

I didn't realise there was a Poppies in Soho. The Camden one is decent but pricey from what I remember.
