  • If you drink coffee immediately before bed you can fall asleep before the stimulant effect kicks in. Probably doesn’t do much for your quality of sleep. If it’s been your routine for years then it’s not going to be a problem. I find that coffee in the evening causes me to wake up in the early hours and have an awful restless night.

  • This is a very effective way of increasing the feel-good aspect of a power nap.
    Coffee straight before nap. Set alarm for 20-30mins.
    Profit from a double whack of alertness when you wake up.
    I can’t think how often I’ve used this trick. It was a mainstay of my student life and occasionally nowadays- but the number of shifts I get a nap in is very few.

    I have no evidence it is anything more than placebo, though.
