Petrol?
They came with an AUA/BBY 1.4 16v engine from the factory, which means any small block VW engine since 1974-2002 will technically bolt in swap.
Maybe you could do a Lupo GTI swap, have 125bhp 1.6 16v with the 6sp O2M gearbox

I went to look at a Legacy 3.0R H6, it had the leather interior and was suitably wafty for long distance cruising.
I can confirm. It's like wafting around on a creamy sofa. Decent poke too.

Am thinking more like euro 6 onwards to be ulez compliant.

To be fair my e61 was a long way from like a sofa. The m sport seats weren't great and the suspension was bumpy on anything but smooth motorway. Hence looking elsewhere. Though the comfort seats in the e61 (option extra) look plush.

If you want true waft you have to go further back, things like bmw E39 530i estate.
My 2015 A4 estate is rock hard on its S-line suspension and 19's... Stupid really!
The most comfortable modern estate I drove recently was a 2012 Peugeot 508 with the 1.6 petrol turbo... That was very smooth, very relaxing and great seats. Huge amount of space in the back. The owner had swapped the 19" wheels for 18's though

If you want a smooth ride Citroen hydraulic suspension.

There will be a combination of 3/4cyl VW group engine / gearbox that you could mix and match that would mechanically fit in theory.
You'd have to do some creative electronics though.

If you want premium premium dated German waft the boots in the e32 and e38 7s are truly cavernous. Take a bike and more easy. Super cheap too. To buy, not run or keep running...
-

Hoping for mix and match electronic possibilities to meet future ULEZ rules..
Sense says I don't need another project as I have projects I'm not doing now.

Well, yes - that is the ultimate. The oleopnuematic system remains unrivalled... but hardly common anymore. Sadly. I drove an old Xantia recently with the intent to buy and it's ridiculous that we put up with any other type of suspension - so smooth but controlled.
I'm a bit of a Peugeot person though and am keeping my eye out for a 504 ti.

True. But if I was looking at old German wagons it'd be a W123 280 TE - maybe with an AMG engine swap...

Yeah the citroen C5 was the last but not sure if it was better than xantia activa system. Cost wise it is expensive to build.
Keep looking at pug 505 adverts and have seen a few of the 505 4x4 that I have thought I would like to have. You know, when I am nipping to Northern African to meet a few beduin friends. Have seen a few 205 trio/junior for cheap and thought that I could make a good 205 rallye copy, with Euro engine 1.3 twin carb engine.

Any heads up on a 0141 engine fault?
Just means itโs running lean, right?

• #52443
Not much wrong here, apart from 10j rears. The interior looks immaculate.

• #52444
And the stoopid gear lever
-
• #52445
I saw that too.
Totally ridiculous but wont take long or cost much to put right. -

According to a mechanic mate, new lambda sensor will fix the problem, phew! Nothing like an engine light to shit you up.

I also enjoy that that's a legit road legal plate here too

VW 181 playing the long camo game, in another 50 years it will be completely covered in algae and be swamp ready. Pretty good family car as its so utilitarian it has drain holes in so you can just jet wash the kiddie sick and crisps out of the interior.
Loving this mint 70's brown Merc.
And I've not seen one of these for ages, a Mk2 Truimph 2000. I gave the lady driver and her passenger a thumbs up and an excited wave, and she waved back and drove off grinning. #winning
Yep true. Mine are all 54 and 56cm.
I went to look at a Legacy 3.0R H6, it had the leather interior and was suitably wafty for long distance cruising.
