They came with an AUA/BBY 1.4 16v engine from the factory, which means any small block VW engine since 1974-2002 will technically bolt in swap.
Maybe you could do a Lupo GTI swap, have 125bhp 1.6 16v with the 6sp O2M gearbox
Am thinking more like euro 6 onwards to be ulez compliant.
There will be a combination of 3/4cyl VW group engine / gearbox that you could mix and match that would mechanically fit in theory.
You'd have to do some creative electronics though.
