There are varying degrees of open back to be honest. Something like a Grado is literally a loudspeaker on your ear and is extremely loud. Whereas something like a Sennheiser HD5/6** is far less loud for others around you. I can happily listen to my HD58Xs in my office without disturbing anyone, for example.
Fortunately, if you got them from Amazon and they're not appropriate, just return them.

Just got the Fidelio X2HR's, happy with how they feel and sound but did not realise how loud open back headphones were, thought I would be able to still wear them with someone else in the room, turns out not unless they want to hear everything I am listenining to
