Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • Probably not. Make sure to check drop.com

They were clearing out their EU warehouse and I think had some very good deals on AKH K7XX and probably sennheiser HD58X and 6XX.

  • Got the replacement cable for my Tin Hifi T4s so I could give them a proper listen.

With the blue foam tips they are very comfortable and have great isolation.

They are very, very good with brilliant detail and imaging. Their best quality though is the bass. Only in-ears I have ever heard that give the sub bass on James Blake's Limit to Your Love a good outing. Simply superb.

I also snapped up a pair of Cambridge Audio Melomania 1s, when they were on sale over Christmas.

Brilliant little pair of full wireless. If the battery life is what they claim (9 hours with 36 more in the case) and they are stable when in busy Bluetooth areas then I will be very happy.

I can see them easily relegating my SonyMX1000 to back up duty. I really loved those phones but the battery life and stability just weren't there. Plus no volume control from the units themselves. Annoying. I may miss the noise cancelling though.

  • After reading through this thread I ordered some Shure SE215 and managed to find them with a mic and not in the clear/transparent casing. I've not changed the buds yet and the isolation and sound are already a massive step up from SoundMagic E10s. Thumbs up lfgss..

  • Just got the Fidelio X2HR's, happy with how they feel and sound but did not realise how loud open back headphones were, thought I would be able to still wear them with someone else in the room, turns out not unless they want to hear everything I am listenining to

  • There are varying degrees of open back to be honest. Something like a Grado is literally a loudspeaker on your ear and is extremely loud. Whereas something like a Sennheiser HD5/6** is far less loud for others around you. I can happily listen to my HD58Xs in my office without disturbing anyone, for example.

Fortunately, if you got them from Amazon and they're not appropriate, just return them.

  • Looking for some cheap and cheerful headphones for teaching video editing, budget max £20 each but if there some cheaper ones out there, the op manager would be even happier.

We used to swear by the Sennheiser hd201 but the newer model is close to £30 and the big boss isn’t going to sign off on it because she is the cheaper the better kind of person for all things, quality is not a word that exists in her world... 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Not really in the audiophile spirit of this thread but I won some of the following on a works trip to China.

Used them for approx two hours last week, definitely not for me.. so for sale.

    Trekz Aftershokz Air
    Midnight Blue
    Pouch, charging cable
    No box, instructions, receipt etc.

Look to be £100 new.. any interest at £60 posted.
I could see these being worthwhile if you want tunes on your commute etc.

FWIW - these were China spec so the Bluetooth voice was Chinese out of the box but I switched it to English without issue.

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for sports headphones?

    • cable only, ideally a short option
    • secure
    • some noise isolation
    • sub £50 (ideally £30)

Currently using some old wrap-around-the-head-and-over-the-ear Sonys with a iPod Shuffle. Pretty shit sound but don't block out background noise at all.
    Bit like these:

I don't need insane isolation, just normal levels.

    Cheers.

  • I found the Monster iSport headphones to be pretty good. Still have a working pair (Victory) from 2013 that have survived plenty of running and general use.

Looks like they've shut up shop, but you can still pick them up from Amazon.

  • Cheers, they look spot on.

Don't need the mic, but if it's not too obtrusive it doesn't matter.

  • I just put my trusty Sennheiser CX-200s through the wash and then through the dryer at the laundrette. I bought some replacements from an eBay shop at the going rate but they're crap, probably fakes, so I'm sending them back. I know they're an old model now, but does anyone know where I can get some genuine ones these days? I have a set of CX-300s as well but I don't get on with the unequal length cord when I'm out running.

  • Does anything exist similar stylistically to the aiaiai tracks but wireless? appreciate I could attach a transmitter, but not quite what I'm after.

  • I'm after a wireless adapter that can be plugged into our kitchen stereo headphone jack as the current 3 metre cable is proving to be quite the trip hazard

  • Wasting time trying to get back up to speed on fake Sennheisers. Found this reddt post, rofl:

Why don't girls ever ask me about my headphones?
I swear, every time I bring a girl home, I make sure to clean everything up in my room and take special care to ensure that my HD800S are prominently on display, hooked up and ready to go with my Schiit stack. But then when we get into my room, she just pushes me to the bed and starts making out with me right away. Like, did you not notice the Senns? I didn't bring you here to make out. I want you to experience the crispy highs, the tight lows, and the clear mids. I bet they sound way better than your scoff airpods. Trust me, you havent experienced true pleasure until you try the - wait where are you going?

  • Received some QC25's today, looking forward to the office on Monday

    Hahhhh

  • Monster iSport

Thanks for the suggestion. Found a NOS pair on ebay for ~£12.

Decent. Very bassy. From a shake of the head they seem stable. Bit of pressure after a while, so probably not for people who run for hours, but probably fine for a gym sesh. Mic is very small and not an issue, although we'll see when I'm running. Looking fwd to see what they're like when I'm sweaty.

  • Wow cool, think I paid £60 for mine back in the day. Cost per wear is now in to the insignificant though, they are properly bomb proof.

  • Can anyone recommend a MMCX cable with a good inline microphone?

  • After some new headphones, not quite sure where to start.

Will be primarily for use in the office, I find it quite a noisy distracting environment at times, so good noise cancelling or isolation is a priority. Would also like to try bluetooth I think as I hate being tethered to the computer, it means I end up not plugging back in when I get up or someone comes to talk.

Last pair of closed back headphones I had made me get quite hot, although that office was boiling in general, but I do run hot anyway. I'm quite concerned that in-ear are screwing with my hearing though, hopefully isolation will help here.

    Budget under £100.

    Any suggestions?

  • I know these are slightly above budget but they've been getting decent reviews and include active noise cancellation...

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/amazon-echo-buds-wireless-earbuds-with-immersive-sound-active-noise-reduction-and-alexa/dp/B07FWGBDN6/ref=sr_1_3?crid=308P02AXDYHMT&keywords=amazon%2Bbluetooth%2Bearphones&qid=1582885111&sprefix=amazon%2Bbluetooth%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-3&th=1

If you've got an iPhone, the Airpod Pros are amazing (but pricey).

  • I have a pair of Tune 205bt's for sale. They are brand new in the box and have Canyon branding, cheapest I can see online is £25, so £20 posted. DM if interested.

  • I've been holding off posting about these until I've used them for longer for a proper review. But I recently bought some OneOdio A9's. They're Chinese made but very well regarded. They have good noice cancelling but there is some hissing if you don't have any music on at the same time, likewise there's a distinct difference between having the ANC on or off, the bass is much heavier with it on.

You can get them for under £30 on ebay at the moment so not a great loss if you don't like them.

  • Nice, those look worth a punt for £30! I'm sure they'll do the job fine for work duties.

  • Any recommendations for on ear or small over ear wireless ANC headphones?

Need some for the gym which aren’t too bulky. I do my cardio outside of the gym so I don’t have to worry about getting too sweaty.

I hate in ear headphones, they always get uncomfortable for me in about 20 mins regardless of the buds I use.

Comfort is probably number one priority followed by noise cancelling as my gym plays some god awful shite at pretty high volumes.
Got a fairly healthy budget for something that will last.
