I used the same combination for a while, but there's something about the geometry of the Sram mtb mechs that doesn't play well with road-size cassettes(12-28 & 12-30, in my case), particularly in the larger sprockets. Even with the B-screw all the way out I could never get the top jockey wheel anywhere close to the cassette.

I use a Red 10s shifter and a X9 rear mech. Works fine.
