I think the main benefit (for my eyes at least) of the 830 over the 1030 is that they partially sorted out the colour saturation on the maps. So, although you lose a bit of screen real estate, the fact that I can see my intended route line and my existing route line in more defined colours (and thicker lines) makes it a more usable device at night.
People still complain about this on the 830 though (and it's still not as good as the 800 in this respect) but I can only assume these are guys who've never tried to use the 1030 at night - an experience that consistently had me stood at the side of the road trying to work out what the scrawl of washed out colours and pixel thin lines was trying to tell me..
