  • in a geared car I think they are also taught to drive up to a stopping point (e.g. junction) in 4th/5th gear and then change down when stopped rather than using the engine as a brake and changing down from 4th to 3rd to 2nd as I was taught in the 80's.

    Well that's if what my son told me when he was taught is to be believed.

  • That's what I used to teach and I've not been a driving instructor for a while now, brakes work quite well on cars now so no need to bother with engine braking unless it's a big ol' downhill.
