    I get the impression from what I've read over the years that the main natural 'source' of B12 are insects, but that may be nonsense. It may explain it being in the soil, though, and vegetarian great apes are said to ingest it because they don't clean their food of insects.

    Just do keep the dialogue on track, B12 is made by bacteria. That bacteria lives in soil and in animals guts, also in insects, but the intensive use of pesticides is also killing the bacteria in the soil so you get less from non organic foods. So one can get it from eating dirty food, and drink unclean water, or snacking on insects.

    Humans also have the bacteria in the gut that produces B12, but it is produced lower in our gut than where we absorb it, so in order to sustain ourselves we would have to eat our own feces.

    So dirt, bugs or feces vs. a supplement.
