Proper leather shoes

I'd assumed they were actually meant to be shoes. But they've always been on my lotto wishlist as I can never imagine when I'll be able to justify them, but I've tried them on a couple of times and they're the nicest things I've ever worn. Which is what prompted me to get the snugrugs - which aren't the same at all.

  • I've bought a pair of Ugg Tasman slippers for Mrs Xmas present.

£76 from Ugg website, didn't seem so bad.

  • Don’t wish to lower the tone but Primark, £8, toasty & going strong two years in. They fail on the “proper leather” bit but you’d never know.

  • £76

No that's fine. I think they were something like £150 when I tried them on in an airport killing time. Tbf it was a while ago at peak Ugg-mania.

  • I have an unlined version of this, still prefer the vastly uglier and supremely comfortable Waldies.

British made and much cheaper than uggs. Various styles and colours. I’ve got the bootie ones and they’re great

  • I’m very anti-Ugg. Reminds me of the hell over a decade ago during peak Ugg when everyone wore them with leggings and a long t-shirt... including my girlfriend at the time who had me stress on ebay to find a genuine pair. I think after two costly returns and arguments with sellers I found a shop in a nearby town that had her size in stock. Wearing indoor footwear outdoor. Ugh, that’s what they should have been called.

However, the manly man slippers, dad works from home and more or less lives in his. Not sure how many pairs he’s been through now, aided by aggressive-chewer quadrupeds.

  • Dark days. Everyone had misaligned heels as well, walking around on the inside of the boot.

  • Ughhhhhhhh that image is burned on my brain, as soon as you said it there it is clear as day !

  • christmas present from my parents is some proper nice shoes for my wedding next year, dipping my toe in here as i'm going to need some help...

  • High polish Oxford. Barkers did me well (and for the 4 other weddings I've been to this year).

  • Define proper nice? C&J or Carmina are hard to beat for ‘proper nice’ fairly priced shoes in the EU. IMO. Tricker’s are great value too but most of their stuff isn’t really wedding vibe IMO. C&J and Carmina have a more slender, smart silhouette.

  • yeah i need to do /some/ research. i need to 100% confirm my suit colour first too.

  • Well. Stuff worth paying attention to based on price, quality at each price point is below. There are of course others but these are the one's worth actually looking at IMO. Probably worth identifiying a manufacturer that makes shoes in a last that fits the shape of your foot, your price point and going from there. E.g. Tricker's have some particularly wide/volumous lasts. C&J have (mostly) narrower and more elegant lasts.

Entry level: Meermin, Loake, Berwick 1707, NPS
Mid: Tricker's, Carmina, Cheaney, Alden, Carlos Santos
    High: C&J
Really high: Gaziano Girling, George Cleverley, John Lobb, Foster & Son

  • thanks! will probably go try some stuff on when i get back to london

  • Not sure C&J are higher end than Alden - would also put Carmina above Tricker’s and Cheaney.

  • Edward Green in the sale is something to consider. Trickers oxfords are decent though and not as roomy as the 'country' styles.

  • Obviously just my opinion. Partly based on perceived quality but also pricing.

The finishing of my Tricker’s is better than my Alden’s. The price of Tricker’s is far more competitive. Especially in the UK. Better QC than Alden, too. I’ve not spent any extensive time with C&J but have looked at their shoes multiple times in the flesh and the construction and end product is far better than Alden. With that said, my Color 8 Alden 975s are without a doubt my favourite shoes.

  • You didn’t even put Church or Russell & Bromley on the list. Not sure what their current quality is like, tho.

  • Those look like pensioner shoes

  • Boomers be ballers

  • yeah, in a good way.

  • You need to confirm the suit first - you want to look and feel awesome on your wedding day and a great pair of new wheels should help but need to work with the suit

I’d suggest heading to saville row - speak with some of the guys in the less formal shops (Richard James/Drakes) and see what they might suggest

  • Otoh @rogan if you don't wear suits very often (or are super rich) then it's better to spend your wedding budget on alcohol and no one will notice what you're wearing.
