  • Windowed eating didn't work for me, but neither will most things during Dec.

You still have 500kcal on fast days? Why not 0kcal?

  • I do wonder this sometimes, and as I haven't attempted 0kcal I can't say it wouldn't work, but it does feel like 500 gives a good feeling of cutting back, without having too much effect on productivity etc. I have a physical job, so I'm worried I'd just totally bonk halfway through the day with 0kcal. I noticed the first few times I fasted that I struggled to concentrate and it felt like my brain was stalling, but that has really gone away now. The two 250-ish kcal meals make more of a difference than you'd think - especially if you do a bit of exercise and need to eat after. The mental benefit of a little bit of food to look forward to definitely helps as well.

The more puritanical of the IF crowd deffo seem to think that even 15kcal would "ruin" a fast, but I have also noticed that those people either tend to have a lot more weight to lose or are simply trying to be the most extreme faster on the block. Eg, I saw a guy advocating 12-6pm eating windows with 3x 24hr fasts a week 6pm-6pm. Which actually means you have 42 hr fasting 3 times week. He had lost a lot of weight, but still had a fair chunk of weight to lose - and I seriously doubt that most people could adapt to such a schedule. It just seems like such a bonkers way of fixing a weight issue.

  • I've done fasts before and I normally feel fine during them on 0kcal but I have a desk job so it's probably quite a bit easier. I still cycle in normally but I don't know how successful tonight's planned turbo sesh will be. Muscle glycogen levels should be ok but it's the mental aspect of thinking I'm underfueled that will mess with me. Will see what I feel like tonight though. Depends how frisky I get on the commute :)

Most diet commentators online just parrot whatever fad shit they most recently believed in. I'd want to read the studies. I'm sure you lose more weight when fasting more but I'm still trying to train as well as function mentally with work so that's not gonna work for me. I'm the first to get hangry.
