  • Mincers thread for mincing >>>>>>>>>>

Literally an overwhelming vote from one forumenger in 2019 suggests we need a separate panettone thread so as not to further infect the annual mincer thread. Odd we don’t already have one, but there we go. It begins.

  • i hate mince pies.

  • I don’t usually get expensive panettone. Carluccio’s ones are supposed to be top notch, but on special offer at £34 for two I can’t justify that.

Wilko red box ones are excellent IMO and an absolute barg at £3.50 for a 900g’er. My local has sold all of its panettone mountain already.

Lidl ones I don’t remember being too bad but I don’t have a Lidl near me any more. Was about £7-8 but that was a while back.

Wasn’t impressed by Waitrose, especially the cherry and chocolate covered in what appears to be low melting point brown wax. Seem to remember Sainsbury’s got it completely wrong, unsurprisingly, and can get in the bin.

  • When I lived in Kingston I used to find some (Motta I think) at the pound shop in January /CSB. The Lidl ones are OK, but low in candied fruit contents.

  • Septic perspective: trader joe > 365. Candies fruit and fat juicy raisins ahoy.

  • Wilko are good and moist according to the girl friend.

  • Think Morrison's 'The Best' ones were recommended in the Guardian's taste test - about £7-8?

  • Had a Tesco one this year. Flavours there but not the texture.

Off to a deli to buy some salami this morning so I'll see if they have a good panettone too.

I think the LIDL ones must be good because the full size ones are selling out within hours of being put on the shelf in our local. Fuck mini ones, tend to be dry.

  • I took a pop on the panettone as desert at my works Christmas do last week - half expected some poncy cupcake sized thing however was presented by a huge plate filled with 2 inch thick slabs of a full scale number accompanied by a wee pot of thin home made custard for dipping it in - was marvelous although I don't think so can face another one this side of Christmas

  • Just having my first slice of the season at my desk this morning...

Carluccio’s ones are supposed to be top notch

I've always found these too sweet (and expensive). Lidl and Aldi seem to be the right blend of softness, candied fruits and aren't too sweet.

  • If any of you lovely people pass through Lewisham, Antonio Deli on Lewis Grove have at least 8 different varieties in today. Cheap and not so cheap.

  • Get the Bauli one.

  • Had a Tesco one this year. Flavours there but not the texture.

Uhhhhh, suddenly got a bad feeling. OH bought me 3 of these. 2.25kg in total. I hope this isn’t going to be a struggle...

  • Different one to the one I had! What's it like? If good, will pick one up tomorrow.

  • Don’t know yet, will be having it for breakfast so I’ll update tomorrow morning. They’re on 3 for £10. Fingers crossed.

  • Is there no pan d'oro love?

  • Ok, verdict on Tesco Finest: tastes good but it’s a bit dry. Texture is closer to bread than fluffy clouds.

@lynx go for it with the pan d’oro. I’ve only not mentioned it because I’m not a fan.

  • An Italian colleague brought in one with mandarin cream inside, was the nuts. Sadly don't know brand :/

  • I've made panettone using dry active yeast, basically just making a big brioche with fruit in it. The traditional way uses natural yeast sourdough starter which takes longer and needs a bit of experience. Even with dry active yeast method takes 2 days to do all the proofing stages. The easy method comes out perfectly well, maybe a little crumby, but it toasts really well.

The main difficulty is getting the paper case to bake it in. They're all the wrong shape and like 3 for £15.

  • I'm more of a Pandoro guy, smashed an Aldi one last week... It was too easy, scared to go back for more...

  • ^ This. I have to limit myself to one panettone a year (very begrudgingly) other wise...it gets a bit Mr. Creosote.

  • U R DTM BRO

Finding pan d'oro is getting better in the UK but mainly panetone.

@greentricky wilko did a pumpkin cream one and that was popular.

@neu That it what panetone traditionally is, an enriched bread. All those christian festivals for Italians have an enriched bread, love a colomba (dove). When my dad became a baker, we made panetone and local Italian breads, we used normal bread yeast. Did take longer as the mix didn't go in to the electric prover.

Paper case wise I just make the greaseproof paper cut to make the base and then made the sides. Some times I glued the paper with either flour and water or suger as a paper glue.

  • To increase your pan d'oro intake, family thing was as fresh pan d'oro would go stale quicker than now, and then we would have breakfast of stale pan d'oro soaked or dipped in milky coffee or milky warm chocolate.

  • These have been in Lidl and Wilko for about a month now. Resisted the Wilko ones when I was passing, but SWMBO came home with a Lidl one. So we open the year with an ok panettone. Carluccio’s have gone bust I think, so I’ll now never know how good they were.

I don’t know why the boxes always open from the bottom, meaning you then end up storing it back in the box upside down. Does my fucking OCD in.
