I've never understood why people use those over normal webbing straps in the same pattern.

it doesnt cost anything if you use old tubes?
that was my excuse anyway, but if I can save 2.5kg then I think I'm about to get one

Depends how many tubes you used...

Not including the ones I use for strapping things down, I currently have 7 which I estimate at 500g each (perhaps more ‘cause £1 shop). Official webbing weighs 1kg.
