As always, I’m not sure if this is the correct thread, feel free to redirect me.
We have had a builder working at our house recently. He has three or four building projects running at any one time ( big and small). Currently he uses his memory to work our bills and the odd handwritten note. I suggested an iPad or similar for him to keep track of staff and costs - basically in real time. Has anyone any ideas if this is a practical solution? And, has anyone any knowledge of appropriate software? I’m guessing Excel or equivalent would work but I struggle with it and I would expect he would too.
All ideas welcome. -

More thorough notes throughout the day, either on paper or phone, then wrap up each day in front of the computer and add the data properly to excel or similar.
Easier said than done though

vertical (?) dock/holder thing
Doesn't that rich young Canadian kid use a Henge dock? They look pretty slick.

All ideas welcome.
Google Keep/similar on his phone and his desktop. Then cut and paste from the desktop app into a spreadsheet on his computer.
It's not overly sophisticated, but it's simple to use and should be an intuative step from handwritten notes. Keep has colours, tick boxes and if you add a #hashtag it groups the notes.

Etsy is usually good for handmade pretty looking, leather sleeves.

I suspect he would struggle with Excel - as do I. ThAnks

I have no idea what Google Keep is but he has an android phone so may know.
Thanks -

Looks like this and is now apparently called Keep Notes. A simple system would be to use hashtags for jobs - ie #12LyonRd, #flat3HenrySt, etc. Then write whatever note is required. Then when he needs to reconcile the info for billing he just types #12LyonRd in the search and runs through the list.
If he has an Android phone he could also use Google sheets which is the same as Excel. But tbh he's going to struggle with Excel/similar then he'll struggled with anything. Systems only work when people use them.
Another solid low tech option is a good note pad.

Like the idea of that henge thing but I suspect, unless dimensions are identical, it won't fit in the 15" version as it presumably needs to insert a USB-C/TB3 into the laptop from somewhere inside the dock. Can imagine trying to force the 16" in and breaking something.

Ha! I was going to say something.
I thought they made a range of them. My bad. Google image shows up some super sexy wooden thing.
Tbh Idk why I'm even here when the only apple product I use is an old shuffle!

Thanks for that. The low tech option was the first suggestion but he thought high tech may be better.

My Wife's boss has said she can help herself to one of the old Mac Pros they've got hanging around, surplus to requirements. I thought it might be useful to have a desktop Mac for my work (photoshop, aftereffects etc, but nothing too intensive) instead of plugging and unplugging 5 cables from my MBP everytime I go to and from my studio. The one she took is a 2009 and I'm pretty sure it's not going to run latest OSes, right? Something about the firmware?
She's taking a look to try and find a newer one (she thinks there are some circa 2012 towers somewhere). Is this even worth it? My 2015 MBP is just about OK for what I need, I just want a desktop version. Is an older Pro going to be equivalent? Slower?

older one's still run fine you can get RAM for smallish beer, and if you want to can upgrade the processor, you'll need to get one which is 5.1 so it'll run upto high sierra without any issues, if you want to run mojave, you'll have to upgrade the graphics card.
This guide should help you fill in the blanks, bit dense but lots of info

That’s a really useful link, thank you!
The tl:dr appears to be that 2010+ is better as it’s already 5.1, but the 2009 with 4.1 I currently have in my possession can be flashed to 5.1 easily and then it’s pretty much the same. I can then look in to any hardware upgrades in the new year. There’s already plenty of ram and something like a total of 4tb of storage in there, which is great for PS/AE scratch disk.
edit: there's one of these up for grabs so I'll go with that one. Faster and already has 5.1 firmware.

Just upgraded from a 6s to an 11 pro max. I was on my second battery and still needing to charge multiple times a day so just said fuck it and went for the baller model. It’s very, very nice. Face ID is way batter than the touch thing. Otherwise it’s still basically just an iPhone. But MASSIVE.

If there are any spare 4.1/5.1 models there, let me know! Would love one...

Apparently you can upgrade CPU relatively easily: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ3K-fub3-w
Pretty interested now.
I thought everything was upgradeable.
