older one's still run fine you can get RAM for smallish beer, and if you want to can upgrade the processor, you'll need to get one which is 5.1 so it'll run upto high sierra without any issues, if you want to run mojave, you'll have to upgrade the graphics card.

My Wife's boss has said she can help herself to one of the old Mac Pros they've got hanging around, surplus to requirements. I thought it might be useful to have a desktop Mac for my work (photoshop, aftereffects etc, but nothing too intensive) instead of plugging and unplugging 5 cables from my MBP everytime I go to and from my studio. The one she took is a 2009 and I'm pretty sure it's not going to run latest OSes, right? Something about the firmware?
She's taking a look to try and find a newer one (she thinks there are some circa 2012 towers somewhere). Is this even worth it? My 2015 MBP is just about OK for what I need, I just want a desktop version. Is an older Pro going to be equivalent? Slower?
