  • Yeah they're a pretty small operation, there was some hiccoughs with my order but it worked out in the end.

  • Aforementioned trousers from The Armoury. The ‘sports chino’. Hate to blow my own trumpet but I think they look reet good.

    Post O’alls jacket. Alden 975s.

  • Nice jacket!

  • Thanks! Since Post O'Alls have moved back to Japan, I don't love what they're doing, but some of their older stuff. Jeez....

  • Anyone got any experience of Everlane clothing? Some of there stuff looks a bit less branded than Finisterre (a good thing for me) but i'm not sure how it measures up in quality.

Looking for at both for well designed ethical options.

  • Isn't Everlane supposed to be both ethical and good quality?

Also worth checking https://www.asket.com/ if you're into that kinda thing. Never tried anything but been meaning to for ages

  • My fiancé has quite a few bits from Everlane. I generally don’t buy stuff made in the classic ‘cheap labour countries’ but if I did, I’d buy from Everlane.

She’s got cotton trousers, t shirts, silk shirts, knitted jumpers, jeans and a leather hand bag. All of them have held up really well through wear and washing. Colours haven’t bled, no bobbling fabrics, fit hasn’t changed, fabrics haven’t stretched. It’s decent stuff.

  • Cheers both. Yes Everlane and Finisterre both have good green credentials so i just wanted input on the quality/design. They're both made in Asia so i may check if Everlane ships straight from the factory otherwise that's a beefy journey to get to me if it's coming from a US warehouse.

@JB, you're NY based? Guessing there's good options for domestic made garments. I struggle with the UK, not the biggest fan of Sunspel and even half of there stuff isn't made here.

I'm on the lookout for a insulated winter coat with a bit of tech but would prefer not to go the Arcteryx/Patagonia route and get something a little more style orientated. Beams are out of my price range and Norse look to me like overpriced Carhartt so if anyone has recommendations i'm all ears.

  • Finisterre insulated jacket + something more stylish on top? I just picked up a Filson short cruiser that's good for autumn / spring but I reckon it'll work through winter with something like a Finisterre Nimbus under it. Or something even thinner like a wool overshirt

  • Pretty sure they won’t drop ship. It is a beefy journey, but it comes on a ship via snail mail, so it’s not as bad. It will obviously be flown to you though, if that’s something that concerns you.

I am NY based, yeah. I’ve been buying a bit of vintage since being here, all of which has been MiUSA, New Balance’s and Alden’s are MiUSA and I’ve bought a load of Engineered Garment’s stuff which is all made in New York. But, it all comes at a price - obviously. Vintage can be cheap though - there’s 8 decades worth of US made clothing just hanging around all over the country. For example I just got an early 1960s Made in the USA Brooks Brother’s sack suit in brown corduroy in fantastic condition for $200...

I’m trying to buy less new clothing generally but sometimes there’s no pre owned substitute. Still have a lot of Japanese stuff, too....

Have you considered used for your coat? Perhaps something made out of Ventile if you want it to be a bit more casual? If you’re not aware of it, take a look at marrkt.com - some good deals on there for quality, pre owned menswear. I’ve got a couple of Vancloth (American version of Ventile) jackets and the water repellency has been really good.

  • at the risk of sounding like a stuck record, try Community Clothing if you want made in the Uk

  • take a look at marrkt.com

uh oh, loads of good stuff on there

  • @kboy not a bad shout. I've got a Pilgrim Surf Supply parka that i stick my Arcteryx Atom under to warm it up but i tend to find layering stuff particularly with hoods a bit of a faff and never feel that warm. The Finisterre or even something like a Manastash gorilla jacket might work though.

@JB thanks again for all the good info. I'm a bit of a minimalist so tend to do a lot of research before buying, i'd definitely consider buying used. Not heard of Ventile before, looks like just the ticket but half way down page one on Google led me here which is kind of at odds with how i'm trying to purchase now

Might look into the more eco option mind!

  • Flax London (disclaimer: it's my brand) :)

We design linen clothes for all seasons, cos it's a very sustainable and underused fabric.
Everything is made ethically and diligently in London, using all natural materials. And we are plastic free, from the factory to your door.

A few people on here have become loyal customers, so might be able to vouch for quality etc.

  • Stock running v low on lots of stuff but we're picking up another batch next week.

  • I've got your winter linen signature shirt on my list! Saw it when looking back through this thread, looks lovely, definitely going to pick one up in due course... Cheers.

  • That’s fair enough. I’ll read that in a bit. Though, to me, buying used Ventile could prevent something from going to landfill :-)

@kboy 20% off with code FRIDAY too.

  • Ace. Glad to hear it appealed. Let me know if you need any help with a size recommendation.

  • Ventile is still lovely stuff, just not the untreated UK material that it used to be. I think it’s made in Switzerland now, supposedly in a more eco friendly manner than it might be in a less particular country. If you’re looking for waterproof look elsewhere but the 2 layer stuff is quite resistant. Look also at Grenfell, very similar and currently sewn in London’s famous.

  • That's a very good point. Like my old car I'd sooner not drive than buy another "eco" car and stick mine in the ground.

Plus it has a Zegna wool interior so that should get me bonus points here?

  • Thanks, I'll keep looking into it because I do like a made to last product.

  • Hm, made to last might call for a mix of plastic-based products, they’ll last virtually forever...

  • for some reason I can never remember how marrkt.com is misspelt and subsequently can never find it online. so thanks for posting it in here.

  • So I came here to ask if anyone had any experience with privatewhitevc and their ventile mac,
    https://www.privatewhitevc.com/products/ventile-mac?variant=25694755848256

Having read above I'm now thinking I should reconsider, any recommendations?
Anything with extra arm length a bonus.

  • What makes you question it? The weather / waterproofness? I'm sure it'll be absolutely fine in the city, or are you gonna spend hours in the rain doing high intensity stuff?
