Final little jobs have been finished on this now so took some proper pictures today (will stop spamming it after this). Its going to be my winter commuter and shouldn't need messing with until Summer 2020, famous last words. Latest changes have been a Shimano dynamo hub, B&M lights, 1x10->SS (42x16), S900 levers, mudguards and full Scoble flaps (including mythical 3rd flap)

Currently working on this - rides like a charm. Somehow, I'll swap wheels for a dyno hub and silver rims. (ATM It has a bottom bracket dynamo). I struggle to find a pair of 32h silver rims, something like dt460 but in chrome.... A lovely bike though, and apart hours of work it was a bargain !

Slightly wider, deeper and heavier than R460, the first is a bonus, the second you can probably live with as it's only 2mm, the third is so small as to be irrelevant.

Google Sanyo Dynapower if you want a general view of the subject. There were similar objects from Soubitez (SJSC has NOS ones), Union and others. Don't get too excited though, he's looking to change to a hub dyno for a reason - the under-BB ones are hard to keep going through more than one winter, and sit nearer to bottle dynamos than to hub dynamos in terms of overall efficiency.

About your question @alialias, here is a pic. The bottom bracket dynamo works really well (powerful enough to handle a B&M IQ:XS 70 lux and a B&M tailight with plenty of parking light). You can even activate it by pushing the lever with your feet while riding slowly.
I do need to change to a hub dyno mainly because I hate noise, especially during audaxes or brevets. There is nothing more annoying to me than riding in a beautiful place with a bzzzzzzzzrrzzzzzrrr sound all night long. Secondly, as @mdcc_tester wisely wrote it, because it is under the fender and crankset, even with mudflap it is very maintenance dependent and not too reliable for long distances as I plan to do with this "randonneuse légère". And last but not least, by wheelbuilding I would be able to use modern day alloy rims with a machined braking surface. Much likely to brake as strong as Mafac Racers and Koolstop salmon pads allows me to!

Meant to protect your drivetrain, between rear wheel and ST. No idea if it does tho

I ran one of these for London commuting back in the mists of time. The roller wears smooth and eventually fails to grip the tyre tread reliably, especially in the wet. It's also heavy. Hub dynamo is the way to go. Koolstop Salmons do improve the braking performance of Mafacs, but from a very low base. You are a brave man to ride them on long Audaxes! Modern deep-drop calipers are much more effective.

I ride on disc equipped bikes, modern v-brakes and deep-drop calipers but I find these Mafac to brake strongly... If you have machined rims. The thing is: people often associate poor rim adherence and heat dissipation with the brake itself. It does brake pretty well with salmon pads. Not to mention that I'll of course swap the brake housing for something stiff and good quality cable. They are a PITA to set up correctly though, like many cantilevers, and are prone to brake sounds.

Too bad, won’t look that good for very long then.

Are you sure about that stem length? I ended up with a 14cm on my similar Pompetamine build to offset the huge back sweep of the bars. Another 5-6cm of stem would bring the mounting bolts of the light directly under the bars and pull the design together a bit more

I had a longer one on it, but on an eBay whim swapped it for a shorter retro one. Immediately knew it was wrong, but not got around to swapping it back yet.

I'll try it with the longer stem at the weekend and then spend many hours over the festive period staring at it to decide if I like the light or not!
