The power of hearsay, when supported by 'photographic evidence', has been multiplied exponentially by social media.
Rather on the platform provided by social media, by agencies that are leveraging and exploiting this aspect for their own / their clients' gain.
Labour / everyone not Tory, has apparently continued to fail to confront this, let alone embrace it.
That's a(nother) failure of leadership.

I had to point out to Dad that the 'photo of boy on floor is fake' was fake.
It wasn't fake, but well done for spreading some misinformation.
And herein lies the problem. Most people take in the lies but aren't interested enough to delve that bit further into things to find the truth.
@sumo yeah agreed, they've been controlling all media for years, print for years, now social media obviously too, but they clearly have a strangle hold on the BBC too which (perhaps naively) only came to light to me during the recent campaign.
