  • The irony of Michael Gove giving a speech where he mentions the people putting their trust in the conservatives, when their campaign was stewn with lies.

  • Fucking Little Englanders eh? I'm glad I live in Scotland these days

  • What was said upthread is truly scary though. After Trump, referendum and now this, it's proof that running a horrible, overly simplistic, dirty campaign really yields results and we'll be seeing a lot more of it.

  • Tell me how Labour would have won without outdoing Johnson on the "Get Brexit done" rhetoric and promising to close Britain's doors to migrants?

Because that's all this election was about.

Appealing to the conservative right means doing that.

  • Gove's victory speech sounded like they just vanquished the evil antisemite Corbyn. Corbyn allowed this to fester, and it's been a powerful tool for the Tories.

  • It's not the taint of antisemitic allegations that damaged him and Labour in the regional heartlands.

    Brexit, Brexit, fucking Brexit.

  • No. Swathes of traditionally left voters voted against immigration. And swathes of traditionally conservative voters voted for remain or for remain politicians. Your compass is wrong. The left in this country needs a new map.

  • Agree. But the Tories had a lot of strings to their bows and this one was powerful.

Finchley & Golders Green had a 20% collapse in the Labour vote

  • BBC claimed that the sum total of votes cast for pro remain/2nd ref parties was >50%. As I suspected.

  • More of this for the next 5 years.

  • After the uprising of the 17th of June
The Secretary of the Writers' Union
Had leaflets distributed on the Stalinallee
    Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could only win it back
By increased work quotas. Would it not in that case be simpler
    for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?

  • Labours a party of the middle class worriers now isn't it?

  • Initial reports I'm reading don't seem to support your interpretation. Have you got links to reports/data for that?
If my initial thoughts on this are wrong I want to learn more.

  • It will be interesting to see how a government of English Nationalists perform in charge of the Union.

Also, will once traditional Labour seats revert once we are into February and no longer an EU member?

  • I didn't...I compared it to the German people's reaction to everything that was done in their name. I did not mention the Holocaust.

  • But Corbyn and anti-Semitism stopped Labour making any gains elsewhere. Instead of the electoral map being redrawn the Tories just won everywhere!

  • Thanks. I'll take a look over this and other polls over the next few days.

  • I agree with this

  • In my constituency, it was people voting Green who let the Tories in. You couldn’t make it up.

Next Labour leader? I’d like to see Keith Starmer personally.

  • I'm sure the antisemitism allegations had an effect. I still think this election was won largely on Brexit though, with other factors

But Corbyn is done now. I can't see how they can ever win with him in charge and I've always supported him.

  • Keir’s brother in case you’re wondering. (Fucking auto correct + disbelief + no sleep).

  • This is exactly what I've been hearing on the doorstep and on the phones this past week.

  • Attlee could also be labelled similar in many ways...The answer to this whole catastrophe is Brexit.

The stats I've read suggest that Corbyn was the biggest problem for voters, followed by Labour's reputation on the economy, followed by Brexit a distant third. I'm sure over the next few days the picture will be raked over endlessly.

EDIT: I see H2O got there before me
