• Pre -internet in the late 80's, teenage me obtained a mail order VHS copy of Akira and was well impressed. I remember excitedly ripping open the posties next Manga VHS delivery, and sitting down in the family living room with my Gran to watch it. She hadn't seen Akira and I thought she would be bored and just ignore it and continue knitting.

    I don't ever recall having read any reviews, and think I just bought the next available Manga I could find via some magazine, and just thought it would be along the same lines. As it turns out, Legend of the Overfiend is not like Akira at all.

  • This reminds me of when I went to Picasso 1932 at Tate Modern last year. There was a room with contemporary artworks, including The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife. The one with the octopi.

    A woman was looking at it and excitedly dragged her distinctly pre-teen daughter over to peer at it closely - it's only about A4 size.

    'Look at this - do you recognise it?'
    'Yes Mum, it's Hokusai'

    Although my parents gave me an Aubrey Beardsley anthology for my 13th or 14th birthday, so...
