Mine also did that, then broke off completely and fell down into the head tube. I’d just replace it with a normal top cap / nut setup (also cheaper)

Ball end Allen keys are very good at wrecking those.

aren't those expander plugs not the best design in terms of distributing the expanding force over a very small area? So probably just buy the longest one you can find and replace the SI. I seem to remember Luescher Teknik saying they're dangerous but I can't find the link.
edit - found it

Should probably replace the one on my wife's SSEHM

They're awful, have rounded off two of them now, last one I had to hammer a torx bolt into it to remove. Replaced with the more solid version and never had a problem since.

When I did road bikes I noticed that Cannondale provide some quite different recommendations on steerer length and set up compared to other brands.
I think the Tl;dr was no spacers above the stem - so you don’t need a longer bung.

I’ve had an SI cap on my CAAD10 going on 5 years and no problems yet. Pulled apart and checked once a year using a quality set of hex keys.

Would anyone have a spider removal tool for the basic SI cranks that they'd lend me?
Do I need a specific crank puller too?

Nothing that a hammer and a bit of wood cant sort out!
no worries. though at 40$ each, plus shipping, plus the extra bolts... a pair of ultegra calipers is 100£...
