Please tell me she's actually the mechanic there...
Oh wait. I forgot, you boys like your girls without clothes and your boys in the workshop.
Sweeping generalisation Nhattattack...
Quite happy with girl mechanics... My mechanic hero is mel allwood who fixed up my derailleur and back wheel in a magical minute after a polo smash up ...
No she's not the mechanic there. Rob has had a some excellent women mechanics as well as guys helping in the shop.

You don't need to tell me who Mel is.
Your right, it is a sweeping generalization, but it's hard not to draw conclusions as to why many male customers would rather not have me work on their bike, why we keep losing women on this forum, and as to why there are not enough women mechanics/riders in general when the consensus is that it is perfectly acceptable to post photos of half naked women up on a cycling website.
I could be completely wrong, there is no way to prove that the same kind of sexism that makes it acceptable to post that kind of photo on a cycling website has nothing to do with the gentleman that told me he would rather speak to a guy, but it's very hard not to draw conclusions.

and you're right Nhattattack there are men who are sexist and do find it difficult to interact with women. I have noticed that occasionally when I work with female colleagues there are guys who struggle to even make eye contact with my colleague when talking to us both (and in our company there are women who have better bike fixing skills than I do)
Apologise if I have offended you by posting that image. It was originally posted to the forum by ev_ (a woman)(http://www.lfgss.com/post504791-31.html) and is relevent to the topic since it is one of the images rob (who has no problem employing female mechanics) uses for his busines card.
And I agree (and have been told by women friends) that this forum is not woman friendly, has a strong whiff of testosterone and brylcreem about it.

True. Gender stereotyping--looking at women and men superficially from a simplistic idea that men ought to be strong (physically) and women ought to look beautiful (physically) is very powerful and has a strong hold not only on cycling, but also on widespread ideas that women shouldn't take physical exercise, etc. Gender stereotyping does find regular expression on the forum, not only with regard to women.

There's no question that there is a connection. Not direct, but certainly indirect, by shared reference to stereotypical ideas about gender.

Sorry to disappoint, but ev_ is not a woman. I was confused by his avatar, too, until I met him. :)

Would be only too pleased to get a good mechanic without a 2-3week wait and if it is a lady, then great, at least she is more likely to take care over what she is doing

Cavendish - have removed their "blog/site"
The authors have deleted this blog. The content is no longer available
However I know this has no impact on their non-internets-shop-interface shop type thing

Welcome to london, and stop being sexist, I'm sure men are just as careful with their work.

We have a male and a female mechanic- both are extremely careful. n of 1 of course.....
The male mechanic is slightly more inclined to give stuff away for free. Then his wife hits him over the head with the large torque wrench.....

That's because living costs money and will cost more given the recent budget. You'll have to reduce the giveaways mate :-).
Carry on Corrine.

Brixton cycles sounds about right to be top of the polls; asking for a smaller toothed back cog didn't seem to consider that i might of wanted a freewheel...

Recommendation for somewhere decent near N4? Need a report for my insurance on the cost of replacing the various bits nicked off my bike (handlebars, hydro shifters etc). No idea how delicate the thieves were so would like somewhere that can have a sensible look at the fork / steerer for damage.
