  • Currently reading My friend the Mercenary, half way though and gripping and horrific in equal measure. Is a memoir about a british journalist trying to be the first to break the war in Liberia by becoming embedded with the rebels while the rest of the world is oblivious to it even happening.

  • a british journalist

In general I've found books written by journalists to be great. A few recommendations off the top of my head:

Richard Dowden 'Africa', the chapter on Somalia made a great impression on me.
Barbara Demick 'Nothing to envy', a family suffering through famine in North Korea.
Oscar Martinez 'The Beast', about Central Americans risking their lives trying to get to the US border.
Souad Mekhennet 'I was told to come alone', a German-Arab journalist writing about ISIS and violent jihadism.

  • A good recommendation. I just finished this an an Audible audiobook. It worked well as an audiobook seeing as it is read aloud by the writer himself. As a television producer he is pretty clued up about how to use the spoken word to its best effect.
I found his documentaries on youtube which made it easier to visualise the stuff he is writing about. But that also sent me down a wormhole Liberia documentaries and news reports that is some of the grimmest, most depressing stuff you can find online :-(
